Happy Birthday to you

After having done with the chromatics and the C scale, it was time for some fun. My trainer told me that even though I m just a beginner, i should be having a few tunes ready in my pocket, lest someone asks me to play some songs. So he taught me the tabs of the famous Happy Birthday song..
Here it is:
e-------------------------------
B--------------1 -0------------
G----0-0-2-0-----------------

e-------------------------------
B--------------3-1------------
G----0-0-2-0-----------------

e----------0-------------------
B------------3-1-0------------
G---0-0-------------2--------

e---1 -1-0--------------------
B-----------1-3-1------------
G----------------------------

Moral: Learning a few easy songs not only increases the confidence, but also makes the road to success seem simpler..

The C-Scale

After having practiced the chromatics a few times, my sir taught me a new lesson today.. the C-scale.
A C-scale (or sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa.. ) is played only on strings and is very easy to learn and master.. Practicing the C-scale also improves the finger strength and hence is recommended for most newbees... It goes something like this:

e---------------------------------
B--------------------0-1---------
G-------------0-2----------------
D------0-2-3---------------------
A----3----------------------------
E---------------------------------

The above string pattern is known as tabs.
now suppose that your fingers are numbered in the following pattern:

So, in order to play the C-scale.. place your fingers on appropriate frets on appropriate strings..such as:
-To play Sa: place 3rd finger on 3rd fret of A string and play that string

-To play Re: play D string open (A zero "0" indicates an open string played)
-To play Ga: place 2nd finger on 2nd fret of D string and play that string
-To play Ma: place 3rd finger on 3rd fret of D string and play that string.. and so on...

Moral: Practice the C-scale a lot of times to improve your finger strength and also to increase your playing speed.

Day 3: My very own Guitar

Usually, guitar classes are taken once per week, but i couldn't resist myself from holding the guitar once again in my hands.. and hence I went to my trainer today to pay the money for buying a guitar.. Guitars usually cost around 3500 to 5000 Rs ( since for a beginner, it is suggested to buy a cheap guitar). I could have bought it myself, there are plenty of stores in mumbai. But it is recommended that you go with someone who knows about guitars before buying one yourself, since you dont want to regret buying a bad one later. So since I was convinced about this fact,I thought that it would be better if he brings a guitar for me. He bought me a guitar that same very evening and I have brought it from him now ... Its time to practice some chromatics .... ;)

Moral: Learning guitar is fun.. but the more you practice.. the quicker you learn.. Hence.. try to buy a guitar soon after you start learning to continue practicing even at your home.

Day 2: My first class

Today was my first ever guitar class.. Infact.. my first ever music class... My trainer was a bass guitarist from a popular rock band of India and is teaching guitar and keyboard for almost 16 years now.. quite experienced I must say !!
To start off with, he gave me his guitar to practice and said that he would buy me a guitar if i wished... I nodded and asked for a few days to arrange the money...
And this is what I learnt on my very first day:

A guitar consists of 6 strings numbered 1 to 6, starting from the thinnest string numbered 1 to the thickest string numbered 6.
Each string has an alphabet associated with it:
E----------------------- thinnest (1)
B-----------------------(2)
G-----------------------(3)
D-----------------------(4)
A-----------------------(5)
E-----------------------thickest(6)

The neck(or the fretboard) of the guitar has many frets as shown below:

By placing you fingers on proper frets.. you define chords and create music !!!
I nodded.. knowing that I would get to know this in detail in my future classes...

He told me to practice chromatics.. Chromatics simply means that you place your first finger (i.e index finger) on the first fret of E(6th string) and play that string.. Now place your middle finger on the second fret of E and play that string again.. Similarly place your third finger on third fret and fourth(i.e. pinky finger) on fouth fret and play individually.. Do these for all the strings....

Initially, when you start playing the guitar, your left hand fingers holding the strings start to sting and pain.. but with practice.. the pain vanishes and hence.. practice a lot.. The more you practice.. the more easily you will ease your pain and become an ace... I smiled and nodded.. looking at my fingers which had turned red by now just by practising the chromatics....

Moral: Know the strings of your guitar.. Practice chromatics to increase your finger strength..

Day 1: The Starters

Music for me is any melodious sound that can please the ear and enlighten the heart.. I have been listening to music for many years now.. Infact everyone of us have.. So finally I thought that it is high time I start creating music.. and what better could I think of other than a Guitar...
A guitar is basically a 6-string instrument that is capable of producing polyphonic sounds !!! Blah Blah Blah ...
Yeah yeah.. i know that.. but from where do I start... Should I buy a guitar first.. or should I join a class first.. or should I save some money and learn it from the net.. or learn it from a friend.... all sorts of questions started surrounding my main motive... Playing the Guitar...
And so finally, the search began...
I went through a few websites and realized that although there are a few sites that can teach you the basics very efficiently.. but there should be someone who can guide you properly and could clear all your doubts.. and I started searching for a professional guitar trainer...
I am glad now that I finally found one today.. and from tomorrow my class.. infact.. my dream.. begins...

Moral: If you are new to playing guitar just like me... try to find a trainer first.. Once you do that.. 50 % of your dream is fulfilled... ;)
